Vol. 453 No. 3

Written Answers. - Plight of Prisoners.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

43 Mr. Dempsey asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs the representations, if any, he has made regarding the plight of persons (details supplied) who have been in prison for six years; and if his Department will be represented at their trials. [7219/95]

I am aware of the case to which the Deputy refers, and of the concern which has been expressed at the length of the legal proceedings involved. Our Embassy in the country concerned has been following developments closely and has offered appropriate consular assistance to the prisoners, including a recent visit to those in custody. As regards the question of attendance at the trial, this is essentially a matter for local decision in the light of all the relevant factors, including the demands on limited staff resources. However, I understand that the Embassy will be following the case closely and intends to be represented for at least part of the proceedings.
