Vol. 453 No. 4

Written Answers. - Price Control Policy.

David Andrews

Question:

117 Mr. Andrews asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the action, if any, that is being taken to ensure that benefits from one strong currency are flowing back to the advantage of the Irish consumer. [9554/95]

As the Deputy may be aware, the Government decided in 1986 to allow detailed price control to lapse. This has been the policy of successive Governments since then, with increasing emphasis being placed on the promotion of competition throughout the economy and the encouragement of consumer awareness of prices including those of imported products. Consistent with this policy, I do not monitor prices.

The "Policy Agreement for Government" provides for the strengthening of competition law by giving the Competition Authority powers of enforcement and enabling the courts to impose fines on those found to be engaging in unfair competition. It is my intention to proceed urgently with these proposals and to establish a list of areas where competitive forces might operate more effectively.
