Vol. 454 No. 1

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Syllabus.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

46 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Education if schools will be able to proceed with the new leaving certificate syllabus next September; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10243/95]

My intention of revising the structure and content of the Senior Cycle from September 1995 in the following manner had been conveyed to school authorities through circular letters earlier this year:—

(i) revised leaving certificate syllabuses, at higher, ordinary and foundation levels, for certain subjects;

(ii) the introduction of the leaving certificate applied for a selected number of schools;

(iii) the admission of additional schools to the pilot phase of the restructured leaving certificate vocational programme.
As a result of action taken by the Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland and the Teachers' Union of Ireland, it has not been possible to provide for the in-service education of teachers necessary for the successful introduction of the programmes. Accordingly, I regret that the above changes, which were due to be introduced in September 1995, have to be postponed. I have informed the education partners and the schools accordingly.
I regret the inconvenience caused by this decision in those who co-operated in planning and arranging for the introduction of the revised structure and content of the senior cycle.
