Vol. 454 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Personnel.

Ivor Callely

Question:

59 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice if adequate personnel and Garda vehicles are available in the Dublin Metropolitan area; if her attention has been drawn to requests for additional personnel or vehicles from any division; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [10278/95]

I refer the Deputy to Question No. 42 which I answered on 8 February 1995 in relation to this matter.

The allocation of Garda manpower and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the present strength allocated to the Dublin Metropolitan area is 3,958. There are 533 vehicles allocated to the Dublin Metropolitan Area. The Garda authorities have informed me that they consider these resources to be adequate at present. However, the situation is kept under constant review and any adjustments deemed necessary will be made.

I am also informed by the Garda authorities that they have no requests for additional personnel on hands from any of the five divisions of the Dublin Metropolitan Area. I also understand from the Garda authorities that they have not received any requests for extra vehicles for the Dublin Metropolitan Area since 1 January 1995. However, they have allocated five additional vehicles to specialist units since that date.
