Vol. 454 No. 4

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil Under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Raphael P. Burke. I now call on Deputy Burke to state the matter of which he has given notice to me.

I request leave to move the Adjournment of the Dáil to discuss the following specific and important matter of public interest: the abject failure of the Government to represent the deeply held view of the Irish people concerning the nuclear issue when at the recent meeting of the United Nations in New York the Government slavishly followed the nuclear lobby and agreed to the unlimited unconditional renewal of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty rather than insisting on a five year renewal period, with specific targets leading to the elimination of the nuclear threat. The failure of the Government's policy is clearly demonstrated by the recent nuclear test of the Chinese Government and the proposal by the French Government to resume nuclear testing in the Pacific, both decisions which we strongly condemn.

A Deputy

That is the Deputy's French friend.

(Interruptions.)

The Government sided with the big boys again.

Order please. Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it to be one contemplated by the Standing Order and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.
