Limerick East): As the Deputy is no doubt aware, the Medical Council has statutory responsibility, which it exercises through its Fitness to Practice Committee, to inquire into the conduct of a registered medical practitioner on the grounds of alleged professional misconduct or alleged unfitness to practice by reason of physical or mental disability. The council has indicated that a total of 85 complaints were received by it up to 9 June, 1995. A breakdown of these complaints by health board area and type is set out in the following tabular statement.
