Written Answers. - Introduction of By-Laws.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Question:

124 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment if by-laws have been introduced by each local authority to control and monitor safety regulations at both public and private swimming pool facilities. [10847/95]

Local authorities have power under section 42 of the Local Government (Sanitary Services) Act, 1948 to make by-laws for the regulation of swimming pools and bathing places maintained by them or to which the public are admitted. The by-laws may require the provision of lifeguards and equipment and appliances for saving persons from drowning. Two local authorities only appear to have made such by-laws.
