Vol. 454 No. 5

Written Answers. - Westport (Mayo) Garda Vacancy.

Michael Ring

Question:

49 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Justice the reason the position of superintendent in Westport. County Mayo, has been left vacant for the third time in 12 months; and when she intends to fill the vacancy. [11096/95]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the detailed allocation of manpower and resources to individual areas. I am informed by the Garda authorities that the superintendent at Westport station is due to be transferred today and that arrangements are in train for the immediate filling of the ensuing vacancy. While this will be the third change at superintendent level in Westport since 19 December 1993 I am informed by the Garda authorities that the superintendent post has been vacant for less than one month during this period. Prior to that the same incumbent was in the post for nearly five years.

The present superintendent took up duty on 28 February 1995, the same day as the previous superintendent moved out of the position.
