Vol. 454 No. 6

Written Answers. - Transport Subsidies.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

197 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if his attention has been drawn to the fact that transport subsidies are not granted to draw slurry in counties outside the main pig producing counties namely, Cavan, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford; and his views on whether these are production costs and should not therefore be a further burden on the taxpayer. [11418/95]

There are no transport subsidies available from my Department for the removal of pig slurry from one area to another. The introduction of such a subsidy could be seen by the European Commission as a national aid to the pigmeat industry and this would be illegal. In any event, my Department has no funds at its disposal for such measures.
