Vol. 454 No. 6

Written Answers. - County Leitrim Fish Farms.

John Ellis

Question:

208 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for the Marine the procedures put in place to monitor fish farms on Lough Allen, County Leitrim; and if he will give details of same. [11344/95]

There is one freshwater hatchery for salmonid smolts on Lough Allen. As is the case for all freshwater aquaculture installations, the owners of the hatchery are obliged under the terms of its planning permission and discharge licence, to monitor water quality at the site and to report the results on a regular basis to the county council and the Department. The owners are also obliged, under standard licence conditions, under the Fisheries Acts, to monitor and report to the Department on fish health status and fish husbandry matters generally.
