Vol. 454 No. 6

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil Under Standing Order 30.

Before coming to the Order of Business I propose to deal with a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Coughlan.

I request permission to move the adjournment of the Dáil under Standing Order 30 to raise a matter of urgent public importance, namely, the dumping by Shell of the oil rig Brent Spar 350 miles off the Donegal coast, the dumping of which will have serious implications for our marine environment and fishing stocks and will pose a real threat to the health of the people of County Donegal and along the northern seaboard. I ask the Government to impress upon Shell the error of its way and the need to give an assurance that the disused oil rig will be dealt with onshore.

Having considered the matter fully the Ceann Comhairle does not consider it one to be contemplated by the Standing Order and therefore I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

It will be sunk tomorrow.

It is urgent.
