I propose to take Questions Nos. 49, 70 and 82 together.

Council Directive 92/102/EEC on the identification and registration of animals, requires inter alia, sheep to be identified by an eartag or other means before they leave a holding. Legislation is currently being drawn up to implement this part of the Directive so that sheep identification systems which meet the requirements of the Directive can be approved. The use of plastic tags, together with other types of animal identification, will be considered when the legislation is in place.
