Vol. 454 No. 7

Suspension of Member.

Before the commencement of business proper this morning I am obliged to deal with a matter of gross disorder which occurred during the Adjournment Debate last evening when Deputy Liam Lawlor defied the Chair and refused to withdraw from the Chamber on having been directed to do so. This necessitated the adjournment of the House and the abandonment of certain matters fixed for the Adjournment Debate.

I would have sought the Deputy's suspension last evening but for the fact that, under Standing Order 20 (3), there cannot be any division during an Adjournment Debate. Consequently, I am availing of the first opportunity to deal with this matter.

I call on the Tánaiste to name Deputy Lawlor.

I move: "That Deputy Liam Lawlor be suspended from the service of the Dáil."

Despicable behaviour on the part of the Chair.

The question is: "That Deputy Liam Lawlor be suspended from the service of the Dáil."

The House was misled last evening.

I will leave the House. I apologise for the controversy with you, a Cheann Comhairle, but I will not tolerate misleading scripts from the Government.

Deputy Lawlor should not compound the insult to the Chair.

Deputy Lawlor withdrew from the Chamber.
