Vol. 454 No. 8

Written Answers. - Cork Speech Therapy Services.

Joe Walsh

Question:

52 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has to provide speech therapist facilities to national schools in the Béara region of County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [11594/95]

Limerick East): The provision of speech therapy facilities in County Cork is a matter for the Southern Health Board.

The speech therapy service at present for the west Cork community care area is provided by one full-time therapist and three sessional therapists providing six sessions. The service in Castletownbere is two days per week on a sessional basis, the second day being provided since April 1995.

Children screened at school medical examinations who are diagnosed as needing speech therapy are referred for treatment. The board has no plans to provide speech therapist facilities to national schools in the Beara region.
