Vol. 455 No. 1

Written Answers. - Court Appointments.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

115 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Justice if it is intended to provide for solicitors to be eligible for appointment to the Circuit Court and High Court; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [11717/95]

I propose to introduce legislation to amend the courts Acts which will qualify solicitors for appointment as Circuit Court judges. At present, eligibility for appointment to the High Court requires 12 years practice as a barrister or ten years practice plus two years as a Circuit Court judge which is deemed to be practice as a barrister.
