Vol. 455 No. 4

Written Answers. - Gender Balance in Garda Síochána.

Mary Wallace

Question:

128 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Justice the arrangements, if any, which are in place to encourage a proper gender balance at each level of the Garda Síochána; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [12387/95]

The Garda Síochána is an equal opportunities employer. It is committed to and supports equality of opportunity in employment and in promotion opportunities regardless of gender, creed, colour or marital status. It is the policy of the Commissioner that the principles and practices of equality of opportunity should apply to recruitment, placement, selection, career development and all other conditions of service of members of the Garda Síochána. It is also the policy to ensure that no member or job applicant receives less favourable treatment on the grounds of gender, creed, colour, or marital status or is disadvantaged by unjustifiable conditions or requirements.

All procedures and practices in this area continue to be monitored and reviewed by the Garda authorities.
