Vol. 455 No. 4

Written Answers. - Prison Places for Women.

Mary Wallace

Question:

127 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Justice the arrangements, if any, she is undertaking to meet the shortfall in suitable prison places for women following recent cutbacks in her Department. [12376/95]

Existing custodial accommodation for female offenders at Mountjoy and Limerick prisons is adequate to meet current demand.

The Government has decided to defer beyond 1996 provision of the proposed new prison at Cowley Place, planned to replace the existing female facility at Mountjoy and which would accommodate up to 60 female offenders.
