Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Question:

228 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Minister for Education the reason she has not provided school transport for a child (details supplied) in Inishnee, County Galway, in view of the commitment given by her Department to the manager of the school in 1962 that, on the closure of Inishnee national school, school transport would be provided to Roundstone national school, irrespective of the number of children involved; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13159/95]

Transport was provided to Roundstone national school since the closure of the national school at Inishnee. The service from Inishnee to Roundstone was withdrawn in June 1994, when the number of eligible children offering for transport fell to one. The requisite number for retention is seven. School transport is still available to the family in question, who reside 1.2 miles from the current pick-up point.

As this is considered to be an adequate level of service in the context of the general operation of the scheme, and as additional State cost would be involved, it would not be open to my Department to restore the former level of service to the Inishnee area.
