Vol. 455 No. 8

Written Answers. - Leinster House Accommodation.

Dermot Ahern

Question:

41 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, the Government has to alleviate the overcrowded conditions which exist in the Leinster House complex. [12726/95]

The need to provide additional space to the Houses of the Oireachtas has been apparent for some time and was recognised as a priority objective by the Government. A number of options for addressing this matter has been under review and the Government recently decided that the best of these options was to allocate Agriculture House, which is adjacent to Leinster House, to the Houses of the Oireachtas.

The transfer will be affected on a phased basis over the next few years. It is expected that the first of the Oireachtas personnel will move into the building by early 1997 following the relocation of the first units of Department of Agriculture personnel from the building and completion of adaptations to the west block by the Office of Public Works.
