Vol. 456 No. 2

Written Answers. - Remedial Teachers.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

24 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education if she intends to have a remedial service available in all primary level schools; if so, when; the number of schools currently without the service; the names of the schools in south Tipperary without a remedial teacher; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13575/95]

I would be extremely anxious to ensure that all children with a remedial need should have access to a remedial teaching service. Significant progress has already been made in this regard and I intend to maintain this momentum, as available resources permit. The number of remedial teachers in place in the primary sector has increased from 947 in 1992 to 1,188 in the current school year. This includes 55 remedial teacher posts which have been allocated to primary schools with effect from September, 1995. As a result of this latest allocation, 71 per cent of primary schools in the country now have access to a remedial teaching service. Of the total of 3,203 primary schools in the country, 918 do not currently have a remedial teaching service. A list of the schools in south Tipperary which do not currently have a remedial service is being compiled at present and will be forwarded to the Deputy early next week.
