Vol. 456 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Mayo Sewerage Works.

Tom Moffatt

Question:

54 Dr. Moffatt asked the Minister for the Environment when he will make funds available to carry out remedial works to the sewage system at Ballina and Ballina Quay, County Mayo, to prevent and remove the noxious and obnoxious odours currently causing problems for local residents and also affecting the tourism trade in Ballina. [14021/95]

A preliminary report for Ballina main drainage scheme stage II, is with my Department. Having regard to the high level of commitments under the water and sewerage programme I cannot say when it may be possible to approve this proposal.

I understand, however, that recent odour problems at Ballina sewage treatment plant arose from operational difficulties which will be addressed by the local authority independently of the stage II proposal.
