Vol. 456 No. 4

Written Answers. - Disabled Children's Allowances.

Brendan Kenneally

Question:

55 Mr. Kenneally asked the Minister for Education the allowances available to children in wheelchairs; and if there are no such allowances, the plans, if any, she has to introduce such an allowance; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [13697/95]

I assure the Deputy that my Department places a high priority on the need for all children with special needs, including children in wheelchairs, to have access to appropriate educational facilities.

Along with all other eligible pupils, children in wheelchairs can apply for either the ordinary school transport service or the special school transport service if attending a special school or class. Where no suitable service is available, my Department offers a transport grant payable to parents of eligible children in order to assist defray some of the costs associated with private transport arrangements.

An enhanced capitation grant is paid in respect of all children whose disability is such that they attend a special class or school.
