Vol. 456 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Michael Creed

Question:

84 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education if she will have arrangements made to provide a home pick-up transport service for a person (details supplied) in County Cork who is attending a special school in Cork. [14193/95]

My Department provides school transport for children attending special schools and classes on either scheduled or special services. However, in some cases, this is not feasible due to particular circumstances such as excessive cost, too long a distance or the inability of a child to avail of the service because of the nature of the disability. In such cases, my Department offers a grant to the parents to help defray the cost of private transport arrangements. The amount payable depends on the distance involved and the level of attendance of the pupil.

I understand that the child in question is picked-up/set down 1.1 miles from his home. I am advised by my Department's transport agents. Bus Éireann, that it is not possible to provide a home pick-up/set down service for this pupil as the road leading to his home is unsuitable for buses.
