Vol. 456 No. 7

Written Answers. - Livestock Exports.

John Ellis

Question:

58 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry if he will give a commitment that his Department will not interfere with the live export trade for cattle and sheep. [14386/95]

I have no intention of interfering with the live export trade for cattle and sheep. It is, of course, absolutely necessary that this trade takes place in accordance with strict animal welfare guidelines and also the EU rules on export refunds are fully observed. I, therefore, introduced new animal transport legislation in April 1995 setting down strict standards in regard to loading and unloading of animals, stocking density levels, feeding and watering, use of trained and experienced personnel and other matters. Further detailed requirements regarding the shipment of cattle from Ireland are currently being prepared in line with expert advice and in consultation with the interests concerned. I hope to be in a position to make an announcement on this matter in the very near future.
