Vol. 456 No. 8

Written Answers. - Funding for Regional Airports.

Austin Deasy

Question:

8 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications the funds that have been provided in each of the past three years for each of the country's regional airports; and the proposals, if any, there are for future expenditure for these airports. [14722/95]

The funds provided for each of the past three years for the regional airports are detailed in the tabular statement which I propose to circulate.

Grant assistance (European Regional Development Fund) was given to these airports under the Operational Programme on Peripherality 1989-1993 for infrastructural improvements at airports. Because of the difficult financial position of these airports as a result of traffic downturn, assistance was granted by the Exchequer on a once-off basis in 1993 for the marketing of the Airports.

I should add also that arrangements are currently in train for payments by the Exchequer in respect of the Dublin/Galway/Dublin and Dublin/ Kerry/Dublin routes under the Essential Air Services Programme.
