Vol. 456 No. 8

Written Answers. - Electricity Supplies.

Peadar Clohessy

Question:

33 Mr. Clohessy asked the Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications when tenders will be invited from the private sector for the supply of electricity to the national grid; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14708/95]

On 6 June last the Government approved my proposals for the restructuring of the electricity sector. One of the key decisions taken by the Government related to the facilitation of competition in the construction, ownership and operation of power generation plants. The first major competition to build, own and will be a competition to build, own and operate the new peat fired electricity generating station of 120MW in the east-midlands which is to be constructed with the assistance of EU Structural Funds. Formal announcements will be made in the next few weeks. Preparations are also under way for a competition for a station of up to 30MW using biomass as a fuel.
