Vol. 456 No. 8

Written Answers. - School Bus Route.

Edward Nealon

Question:

54 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Education in view of the severe medical problems being experienced by the children of a family (details supplied) in County Leitrim, if she will accede to the request to have the bus route changed so that the children can be picked up at their own home in view of the fact that the total distance involved is only 0.7 miles and in view of the severity of the illness that they have as verified by medical documentation with her Department. [14764/95]

Extensions of school transport services on medical grounds may be considered only where it has been determined by my Department's medical advisor that children are severely medically handicapped and their condition is so serious as to prevent them from making their way to the pickup point or to the school.

On the basis of the medical evidence submitted, these conditions were deemed not to apply in this case.

If the medical condition of the children concerned has deteriorated in any way, on receipt of further medical evidence, my Department will submit the case to the medical advisor for reexamination.
