Vol. 457 No. 3

Written Answers. - Galway City Smoke Levels.

Máire Geoghegan-Quinn

Question:

87 Mrs. Geoghegan-Quinn asked the Minister for the Environment if he will consider making an order declaring Galway city a smokefree zone; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15278/95]

My Department has concluded a review of urban smoke levels on the basis of data provided by the Environmental Protection Agency for the 1994-95 heating season.

Monitoring results for Galway city continue to demonstrate a very satisfactory air quality relative to the statutory standards of smoke. While I have, therefore, no immediate plans to extend controls on bituminous fuel to Galway city, the situation will be kept under review.
