Vol. 457 No. 4

Written Answers. - Traffic Wardens.

Seamus Brennan

Question:

158 Mr. S. Brennan asked the Minister for Justice the facilities, if any, there are to accommodate traffic wardens on a part-time basis; the arrangements, if any, there are for traffic wardens who for health reasons are unable to work the normal nine hour day. [15327/95]

Traffic wardens, both full time and part time, are employed by the Garda Commissioner. I understand from the Garda authorities that the current strength of the service is 55 full-time wardens and 118 part-time wardens.

I understand that, for technical reasons, full-time and part-time wardens are recruited under separate competitions, each with specific conditions of service. There is, at present, no mechanism for a full-time warden to become part-time or vice versa, other than through open competition. I also understand that the public service job sharing scheme does not apply to full-time traffic wardens.

The union representing the majority of traffic wardens has raised these matters with my Department and they are currently under review.
