Vol. 457 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Statistics on Emigrants.

Austin Deasy

Question:

3 Mr. Deasy asked the Taoiseach the estimated number of people born in this State who are living abroad; and if he will give the estimated number in the principal countries of residence. [15673/95]

It is estimated that about 900,000 Irish born persons were living abroad in 1991. The source of this estimate is the Census of Population of the principal countries to which Irish persons emigrate. A breakdown of this figure showing the main countries of residence is given in a statement which I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

Following is the statement:

Irish born persons classified by country of usual residence in 1991.

Northern Ireland

35,000

Great Britain

592,000

Australia

52,000

Canada

17,000

United States

170,000

Other countries

34,000

Total

900,000

Notes 1. The United States census was carried out in 1990.

2. The main source for the "Other countries" figure is the Council of Europe publication "Recent demographic developments in Europe, 1995".
