Vol. 457 No. 7

Written Answers. - Proposed Loran C System.

Pat Upton

Question:

314 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for the Marine the cost of all work to date in preparation for the planned construction of the Loran C Navigation station at Loop Head, County Clare. [15922/95]

While construction work on the site of the proposed Loran C station has not yet commenced pending the completion of the planning and legal process, certain preliminary costs have been incurred by the Irish Exchequer in respect of the project. These costs, which amount to £999,823, have mainly arisen in relation to land purchase, site development, the planning process and contributions to the co-ordinating agency for the overall North West European Loran C system. Under the terms of the International Agreement which Ireland entered into in respect of the overall Loran C system, France and the Netherlands are to contribute 50 per cent and 5 per cent respectively, towards the capital cost of the Irish station. I understand that the French and Dutch Governments have, in accordance with this agreement, already paid £1,524,455 in respect of the Irish system.
