Question:317 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for the Marine if he will issue mariculture licenses for Bantry Bay, County Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16316/95]
Written Answers. - Mussel Growing.
The licensing of mussel growing operations in Bantry Bay has been hindered by long-standing local difficulties in determining suitable areas for the location of these mariculture developments.
The Department has devoted considerable resources over a number of years in efforts to secure agreement between the mussel producers and the Bantry Bay Harbour Commissioners on the identification and mapping of areas for mussel culture which meet navigational and safety requirements.
I am hopeful that agreement on the issues is now, finally, in sight so that the licensing process which will legally underpin the valuable mussel growing operations in Bantry Bay can proceed.
