Vol. 457 No. 7

Written Answers. - Grant Scheme.

Brendan Smith

Question:

50 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for the Environment the proposals, if any he has to provide grant assistance to occupiers of privately owned homes which are their principal place of residence and which lack bathroom and sanitary facilities or need other improvement works to make them adequate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16339/95]

The Government's priorities in the housing area, as set out in A Government of Renewal and in the policy document Social HousingThe Way Ahead, are to expand the local authority and other social housing programmes and to upgrade deficient local authority dwellings. As the available resources will, accordingly, be concentrated on these programmes there are at present no proposals to reintroduce a generally available improvement grants scheme.
