Vol. 458 No. 2

Written Answers. - Residential Detention.

Tony Gregory

Question:

109 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education if residential detention was available for three 12 year old boys whose parents had refused to take them back home over the weekend of 3 November 1995. [16656/95]

Decisions regarding the placement of children in places of detention are a matter for the courts.

I understand that the case to which the Deputy refers relates to three boys aged 10, 11 and 13 years. The boys in question were held for a time on Saturday 4 November at the Bridewell Garda Station.

At a court hearing on that day, the 10 year old boy was released on bail. The court directed that the other two boys be remanded until Friday 10 November at Oberstown Boys Centre, Lusk, County Dublin.

Both boys were accommodated at the Oberstown Centre.
