Vol. 458 No. 5

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Michael Ring

Question:

109 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education the reason children (details supplied) in County Mayo have to walk up to two miles to get the school bus in view of the fact that the children should be collected from their home. [17137/95]

Neither my Department nor Bus Éireann, which acts as agent for my Department in the operation of the school transport scheme, has any record of the family named offering for school transport.

However, I can confirm that there is a family in this locality which is 1.2 miles from the present pick-up point of a school transport service. This distance is well within the guidelines of the school transport scheme.

While sanction was previously granted for an extension on this service, my Department was advised that the condition of the road in question was such that it is unsuitable for a school bus. When adequate repairs are carried out on this road, the operation of an extension can be examined further.
