Vol. 458 No. 6

Written Answers. - Judicial Appointments.

Noel Treacy

Question:

72 Mr. N. Treacy asked the Minister for Justice the number of judicial appointments and/or promotions made by the Government since 1 December 1994, to all courts in this country including the European Courts of Justice; the names of the people appointed; the county where they were born; the towns in which they have practised prior to appointment; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [17514/95]

The following judicial appointments have been made since 1 December 1994: Mr. Declan Costello, an ordinary judge of the High Court, was appointed President of the High Court; Mr. Brian McCracken and Ms Mary Laffoy were appointed judges of the High Court; Mr. Seán A. O'Leary was appointed a judge of the Circuit Court; Mr. John O'Neill, Mr. Michael O'Leary and Mr. David Riordan were appointed judges of the District Court; Mr. Nial Fennelly was appointed Advocate General to the European Court of Justice; Mr. Donal Barrington was reappointed to be a member of the Court of First Instance of the European Communities.

I do not consider that it would be appropriate to disclose any personal details held in my Department's records about the county of birth or career history of appointees to judicial office other than to confirm that all appointees were fully qualified in accordance with requirements for each appointment.
