Vol. 458 No. 6

Written Answers. - Economic Developments.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

77 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment the economic benefits that have accrued in Cavan and Monaghan as a result of the cessation of violence; the additional funding that has been allocated; the number of new jobs that have been created as a result; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17299/95]

As indicated in my reply yesterday to the Deputy's similar question on the economic developments that have taken place in the Border counties as a result of the peace process, it is difficult to assess how much development can be attributed to the peace process alone or to say how many jobs have been created as a direct result.

In terms of activities relating to the agencies that come under my responsibility, yesterday's reply gave comprehensive information on this and I would hope and expect that Cavan and Monaghan would share in the benefits accruing.

I should stress that economic benefits could be expected to arise in areas outside the ambit of my responsibility, notably tourism.

In terms of funding, I take it that what the Deputy has in mind particularly is the impact funds such as IFI and the EU "Delors" package are having in Cavan/Monaghan. Responsibility for the administration of these funds rests primarily with the Ministers for Foreign Affairs and Finance, respectively.
