Vol. 458 No. 8

Written Answers. - Shannon-Erne Waterway Mooring Facilities.

Brendan Smith

Question:

57 Mr. B. Smith asked the Minister for Arts, Culture and the Gaeltacht if he will ensure that additional mooring facilities are provided at an early date on the Erne-Shannon Waterway at Ballyconnell, County Cavan, in view of the heavy volume of cruiser traffic using this waterway and the total inadequacy of the present facilities; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17508/95]

A recent survey of boat traffic and of the use of mooring facilities on the Shannon-Erne Waterway indicates that the existing facilities will require augmentation in a number of areas.

While there are no funds available to me at present for the provision of additional moorings in any of these areas, I am, however, examining the possibility of securing alternative funding and I have asked the Waterways Service to consider where and how best additional mooring facilities could be provided if such funds become available.
