83 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Health the plans, if any, he has to appoint a public oncologist in Cork; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17598/95]
Limerick East): As part of Comhairle na nOspidéal's recent review on consultant manpower in Cork, submissions were made to comhairle for additional staff in a range of specialities including medical oncology. Comhairle na nOspidéal has accepted the need for a medical oncologist in Cork. In accordance with the recommendations of the Comhairle report, all new consultants posts for Cork will fall to be processed through the pan-hospital structure, in consultation with management of the agencies concerned.
Once this process has been completed, I will then be in a position to consider an application for a consultant oncologist in the context of competing priorities for development funding and available resources within the acute hospital sector.
