155 Mr. D. Ahern asked the Minister for Social Welfare the number of people currently in receipt of lone parent allowance; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18020/95]

The lone parent's allowance scheme was introduced in 1990 to assist parents who were bringing up a child or children without the support of a partner. There were 44,900 recipients of the payment at October 1995 comprising the following: unmarried persons, 33,220; separated spouses, 9,896; widowed persons, 1,684; prisoners spouses, 100; a total of 44,900.
