Vol. 530 No. 2

Written Answers. - Child Abuse.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

81 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Health and Children when the remainder of expenses due to a person (details supplied) in County Waterford for attending meetings on behalf of the Alliance for the Healing of Institution Abuse between January 1999 and August 2000 will be paid; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3441/01]

As the Deputy will be aware, the Government made a total of £4 million available in May 1999, on a full year basis, to allow for the establishment of a counselling service for those who were abused while in care and £200,000 of this was set aside for central developments, including the funding of support groups. In July of last year a payment of £11,000 was made to the Alliance for Healing of Institutional Abuse. This money was paid with a view to making ex gratia contributions to committee members for costs incurred in the carrying out of their functions – including the person to whom the Deputy's question relates.

The amount of £11,000 was agreed with the committee of the alliance of which the person in question was previously a member. Given the agreement with the committee, it is not proposed to re-open this matter.
