Vol. 459 No. 3

Written Answers. - Pilot Resort Scheme.

Tony Killeen

Question:

64 Mr. Killeen asked the Minister for Finance if he will seek the inclusion of the environs of Kilrush Creek Marina in the pilot resorts scheme in 1996. [18216/95]

The new renewal scheme for traditional seaside resorts commenced on 1 July last for a three year period. The purpose of the scheme is to renew and update the tourist amenities and facilities in a certain limited number of seaside resorts.

I stress that this new initiative is a pilot scheme and is thus of an experimental nature. It must, therefore, be applied on a limited basis to evaluate its efficacy.

Kilrush was not selected for inclusion in this scheme; however, Kilkee and Lahinch, both of which are situated in County Clare have been selected for this pilot scheme. As the Deputy will appreciate, it is not possible to designate every area of the coast for the purposes of this pilot scheme.

Until this pilot scheme is firmly established it would be inappropriate to consider the designation of any further towns. Consequently, I have no plans to extend the scheme.
