Vol. 459 No. 3

Written Answers. - Punt-Sterling Exchange Rate.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

72 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Finance the average exchange rate between the Irish Punt and the Pound Sterling in each of the years from 1985 to 1994; the volume of imports and exports between the Republic and the United Kingdom in respect of each of these years; and if he will give estimates of the position for the first nine months of 1995. [17992/95]

The exchange rate figures sought by the Deputy are set out in the following table. As regards volume of trade, official figures are not compiled for the volume of trade with the UK or any other individual country: the table therefore shows the value of trade with the UK, for the years 1985 to 1994 inclusive. The trade figures from 1993 onwards are not fully comparable with those of earlier years, due to the introduction in 1993 of the system of compiling intra-EU trade statistics known as Intrastat, which was necessitated by the advent of the single market. As regards 1995, the latest trade statistics available are for the six months to end June and these are shown in the table.
