Vol. 459 No. 3

Written Answers. - Register of Electors.

Patrick D. Harte

Question:

112 Mr. Harte asked the Minister for the Environment if he will consider amending the law governing the dates of the Register of Electors to introduce 1 January to 31 December instead of the current dates which are being used. [18003/95]

The timetable which currently applies in relation to the compilation of the register of electors is provided for in the Electoral Act, 1992. This timetable came into operation for the 1994-95 register; under it, the register comes into force on 15 February each year.

I have no proposals at present to revise the timetable for preparation of the register. However, the possibility of continuous registration is one of a number of electoral matters which I put forward some months ago for consideration by the Select Committee on Finance and General Affairs. The committee has agreed to consider these matters and I look forward to receiving its report in due course.
