Vol. 459 No. 6

Written Answers. - Disabled Person's Vote.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

28 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for the Environment the plans, if any, he has to amend the law to ensure that permanently disabled voters will not have to apply each year for a disabled person's vote. [17946/95]

Under the Electoral Act, 1992, the registration authority is required to enter in the special voter's list the name of every elector who applies to be so entered and who satisfies the registration authority that he or she is unable to go in person to vote at the polling station due to his or her physical illness or physical disability and that the disability or illness is likely to continue for the period in which the relevant register is in force.

The existing arrangement operates on the basis of an annual application and I have no current proposals for amendment of the scheme in this respect. However, I am prepared to review the matter in the light of any proposals made by the Select Committee on Finance and General Affairs following the review of aspects of electoral law which they have agreed to undertake.
