Information on the unit cost of local authority housing in the form requested is not readily available. Local authorities are, however, notified on an annual basis of indicative costs for houses constituting part of their housing programmes. Where all-in costs do not exceed the relevant figures, an authority may proceed with the construction of the houses without having to obtain the prior approval of the Department. Where costs are greater, the Department's specific approval is required. The indicative cost figures are revised annually and those for 1996 for one, two, three and four bedroomed non-rural houses and two, three and four bedroomed rural houses are set out in the following tables.
