Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Exemption from Irish.

Mary O'Rourke

Question:

312 Mrs. O'Rourke asked the Minister for Education if she will review the case of a person (details supplied) in County Galway who is unable to continue with Irish as a subject due to his dyslexic condition. [19149/95]

The position at primary level is that Irish is a compulsory subject except in the case of children who have been educated outside of the State up to the age of 11 years of age. At second level there is provision, in certain circumstances, for exemption from Irish for children with specific learning difficulties.

It will be open to the person concerned to seek such an exemption from studying Irish and attending Irish classes when he transfers to a second level school.

In the meantime, because of the child centered approach to the teaching of all subjects at primary level, his class teacher will undoubtedly take full account of his specific learning difficulties.
