Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - Industrial Development Review.

Pat the Cope Gallagher

Question:

524 Mr. Gallagher (Donegal South-West) asked the Minister for Enterprise and Employment his views on the results of the IDA review for industrial development for 1995 for Border counties; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1415/96]

In its end of year statement for 1995, IDA Ireland shows positive results of 411 new jobs created in the north west region and 454 jobs created in the north east region. This compares with total overseas job creation of 11,500 in that year.

As I have indicated in reply to a separate question, the location of projects and the provision of employment in particular areas of the country is a matter for the day to day administration of the development agencies and not one in which I have a direct function. In addition, the decision as to where a particular project actually locates is ultimately a matter for the enterprise itself. IDA will continue to promote Border regions to potential mobile investors, while encouraging the expansion of existing overseas companies located there.
