556 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry the estates held by the Land Commission in each county; the current status of each holding, whether rented or otherwise; and when it is proposed to dispose of each holding. [1065/96]
According to our records the lands described in the following list are still in the hands of the Land Commission. In individual cases it is not possible to give a date for disposal but every effort is being made to dispose of all lands as quickly as possible. Where practicable and cost effective, all lands are let but non-agricultural and less productive agricultural land tends to be very difficult to let for economic reasons. It is not possible to let some of the lands listed because of ongoing local or legal disputes.
If the Deputy requires any further information in any particular case my Department will provide such information.

557 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Forestry when he proposes to wind up the Land Commission; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1066/96]
Commencement of the Irish Land Commission (Dissolution) Act, 1992 and the statutory abolition of the Land Commission for which it provides has had to be deferred pending the outcome of a High Court case. I am not, therefore, in a position to say how soon the Act can be brought into operation. In the interim, considerable progress has been made in winding up or completing the remaining work of the Land Commission. The amount of agricultural and non-agricultural land on hands has been reduced by some 75 per cent and 50 per cent respectively and the number of allottees awaiting vesting by some 40 per cent. I intend to ensure that this progress is maintained.
