Vol. 460 No. 3

Written Answers. - London Death.

Éamon Ó Cuív

Question:

94 Éamon Ó Cuív asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs if he has received a formal reply from the British Home Office to a letter sent to it in November 1994, regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of a person (details supplied) in County Galway; and if so, if he will give a copy of the reply to the family. [1088/96]

The question relates to a death in London.

In November 1994 the Embassy in London wrote to the Home Office giving a general outline of the grievances and suspicions of the family of the deceased person and asking that these be investigated. Subsequently, the Embassy discussed the matter with the Home Office and indicated that we would be taking up with them any additional specific points identified by the family's legal advisers as requiring explanation or clarification. As solicitors for the family were examining the case it was suggested to the Home Office that a formal reply could be deferred until a more comprehensive picture of the matters at issue was presented to them.

The family have new legal advisers whose work on the case the Embassy in London are monitoring. I have instructed the Embassy to assist the solicitors in any way they can. They are currently in contact with the London Metropolitan Police about obtaining access to their file.

The family will be kept informed of any developments arising from contacts between my Department and the Home Office.
